Spring is returning to the mountains! Snow in the high country is melting. Now is the time to plan for day trips.
Just 45 minutes from downtown Oakhurst is the Nelder Grove of giant Sequoias. In this little known grove you can get close and personal with some of the largest trees in the world.
Take the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway out of North Fork. This easy day trip takes you through pine forests to the high elevation fir forests and green meadows. See mountains over 13,000 feet! At Mile High you can see most of headwaters of the San Joaquin River. You'll even see Mammoth Mountain Ski Area which is on the crest of the High Sierra.
Yosemite in the spring is wonderful. Get there before the summer crowds. The "valley" is just 90 minutes from Oakhurst. We like driving up Highway 41 through Fish Camp and Wawona and driving back down Highway 140 along the Merced River and into Mariposa where we get Highway 49 back to Oakhurst.
Don't forget Bass Lake! Don't miss The Forks and Miller's Landing during the week. (On weekends it takes a long time to get your hamburger.)
